Masters of Film

Our famous Tuscan person of this month is a cinema and theatre director: Franco Zeffirelli.
He was born in Florence in 1923 and he’s one of the Masters of film making in the world. Most of his movies are international collaborations and have international cast of actors.
Only to mention some of the latest works, you can remember Jane Eyre, from the novel by Charlotte Bronte; Tea with Mussolini, about the Second World War, almost all filmed in San Gimignano city in Tuscany; Callas Forever, a movie talking about Callas’ last months.

In Florence you can visit The Franco Zeffirelli International Center for the Arts and Enterntainment, supported by Zeffirelli himself.

This centre collects the artistic and cultural heritage of a seventy-year career. In this museum and art centre you can see sketches and studios for the theatrical and film staging, direction annotations and scripts, stage pictures and press reviews. The Center promotes exhibition and educational initiatives, both for diffusing the art of the entertainment culture and for training in the range of prose theatre, opera and cinema.

If you’re a film buff you must visit this centre during your stay!
But this year, on April, there’s something more about Maestro Zeffirelli: at the International Handicrafts Trade Fair in Florence from April 21st to May 1st, you can visit an exhibition of 16 lithographies coming from his original sketches.

So if you’re planning to go to the fair, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this exhibition at Padiglione Cavaniglia, in Fortezza da Basso. But if you’ve more time, go and visit the museum in San Firenze complex, with the complete collection of Zeffirelli’s works.
